A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
