Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.

The struggle is worsened if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle management.
